I prefer lots of coal fired power stations in short term while we build loads of nuclear power stations. All made in the UK from start to finish.
We could open up all the mines back up.

Overnight recharging can use off-peak supply.
Indeed - until we are all charging our electric cars over night - then it will potentially no longer be an off peak supply.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_S - gives detail of the range - generally enough for all but the most crazy of commutes.

All Tesla Supercharger stations to be solar powered, says Musk : RenewEconomy - will not work everywhere but it is a step in the correct direction

Maybe - although how much of the demand is made up of 9-5 offices and so even with the increase in off peak demand it may still be well below daytime usage....

          or maybe not

will be fascinating to find out.. (not)

But the key difference between electric and oil fueled cars is that with an electric car you always start the day fully charged. Unless you are making a round-trip > 170 miles in a single day you won't need to be concerned about topping up.

With petrol you: Fill Up, drive, drive, drive , drive, oh I'm nearly empty, Fill Up ....

With electric you: Charge overnight, Drive, Charge overnight, Drive, Charge overnight, drive ....

It's obvious but it's a completely different mindset to what we are used to. Thinking about an electric car's range in the same way as you would with a petrol/diesel car is misleading.

I would imagine that for most people doing a regular commute of 20 - 30 miles each way an electric car would be ideal.
What about those of us who live in town and have to park on the street? How are we expected to charge overnight? Your solution is perfect for anyone who lives in a suburban close with their own driveway or garage, and not very good at all for everyone else.

You wait a few years and it won't be necessary. Haven seen the current state of the art last week self driving cars are not that long away (easily within the life time of my next car).
