Anyone know of any good gardening sites or have any tips for how to grow some grass? Not the herbal kind!

Put some seeds down a few weeks ago, not much happened. Gardener came round and said I needed to put top soil down. Did that, a tulip load more seeds and now waiting for the results.

Any advice?

Regular watering and a scarecrow to keep the birds from eating the seeds

Never managed to have any success with grass seed either, despite following instructions on the packet. Just use turf, much easier.

There's not been much rain. Probably too dry to germinate?

Make sure it's tamped down on top of the soil. Water it and never let it dry out, not for a second.

What I've learned is that as long as you aerate, scarify, fertilise and apply soluble iron, reseed, cut regular, water at the correct time of day you can't go far wrong.

And then the bloody dog goes and creates a patch due to cocking his leg in the same place!

Fertiliser - it really works. How do I know?

As a youngster we used to lay some on the neighbour's lawn with a very suggestive outline. No matter how many times he'd cut it, the meat and two veg returned.

I got meself from of that 4-in-1 stuff - moss killer, weed killer, feed and green.

Spread it on my back lawn, which was already 'OK' - moss died (check), weeds died (check), grass is definitely greener except in one small patch which it seems I missed (I tell the missus that was my control sample), and then there is another completely dead patch where the spreader fell over and tipped the contents out.

Spread it on my front lawn, which - it turns out - was mostly moss. It went black within hours. Green shoots are appearing (alas, it has been raining since the day I planned to rake it so I haven't been able to run the scarifier over it) but a tulip load of clover has appeared where the blackened moss is.

The front lawn will probably become a nice resin bound driveway later this year instead.
