Similarly, not all EU territories are in the Customs Union. Just ask Gibraltar.
That the UK already complies with EU regulations and the Great Repeal Bill will enshrine EU regulations into UK law directly, then there is no reason why we need to be outside the Customs Union.
The Customs Union does not even need to include everything, but what it does mean is delegating control of international trade agreements to the EU. The transitional deal could well be that we are free to set up our own international trade deals but if we do then any items within that trade deal become removed from our customs agreement with the EU. This allows politicians to spin that we are free from the EU shackles to create our own trade deals whilst in practice it would be stupid to do so.Taking a break from contractingComment

The problem with the referendum is that we vote for a departure but not a destination.
Camoron should have set out its Brexit stall. If the government had created a referendum manifesto to leave the Customs Union, leave the single market, completely detach itself from the EU and all of its bodies and revert to WTO rules, then that would be different. Instead they took the "nah, they'll never vote to leave" line and instead resorted to throwaway comments in TV interviews and make idle threats which were even more unrealistic than 'That Bus' and allowing it to become about immigrants.
It was up to Vote Leave to get people to Vote Leave, but they could never create a manifesto for government - they weren't in government. It was up to the government to officially set that out what Brexit would actually mean. That would have turned many moderate leavers into reluctant remainers instead.Taking a break from contractingComment

Yeah, The PM needed to have been more explicit about leaving the single market...
