Man sobs as he is jailed for killing friend over Uber shoe prank

Which one of you was this? Haven't seen DA for a while!

A business development manager who killed a recruitment consultant with a single punch for jokingly throwing his shoe out of a taxi sobbed as he was jailed for three years.

Alexander Thomson, 33, struck 23-year-old Thomas Hulme when he carried out the prank, twisting his head around and causing fatal injuries.

The victim had pulled off Thomson’s shoe as he put his feet up between the seats, and tossed it out of the window as their Uber cab sat at traffic lights.

At the Old Bailey today, Judge Anthony Bate sentenced an “abject” Thomson to three years in prison, telling him: “This unusual assault arose out of trivial horseplay between friends and colleagues, which can be properly distinguished from those involved in gratuitous violence in the street.

He said it was clear Thomson is “consumed by guilt and remorse for all the pain and suffering you have wrought by a momentary thoughtless act”.

Was the victim's occupation seen as a mitigating factor?

Well, we don't know the whole story. Sounds like he had the guy in a headlock and then, who knows (I'm extrapolating here), if the taxi lurched abruptly away from the traffic lights, as they do (especially if the taxi driver could see the horse play in the back and disapproved), then the body of the guy in the headlock could have rapidly spun right round before the other guy had a chance to release his head ...
