Not just for the musical content but for all the extras that came with the album.
I've already alluded to my favourite in another thread. Unfortunately, the version I now have is a soulless MP4 file from iTunes but the original had extras galore.
That album was Venus and Mars by Wings.
A single album in a gatefold sleeve. I remember unwrapping it at Christmas when I was about 13 and seeing that Venus and Mars motif for the first time. A motif that also featured on a huge poster that came with the album as well as a set of coasters. All emblazoned with the slogan Venus and Mars are Alright tonight.
Wonderful stuff. I recall scrawling those words over my school exercise books thinking it was the coolest thing in the world to do.
Probably even scrawled it on the back of my jacket. Now, if only they'd done an iron on patch as did Judas Priest with the British Steel Album.
Am I right in remembering an album by Gaye Bikers on Acid entitled Drill Your Own Hole? You were literally required to do just that in order to accommodate the spindle on your turntable.
I used to love all those vinyl gimmicks. Cue John Cooper Clarke.....
