The second link is a thesis provided for a masters. It doesn't set out to debunk that the Darien Scheme was a failure or that the English where to blame.
It's just tries to prove that the scheme didn't fail because of Scottish incompetence. In the real world many schemes don't fail because of incompetence but because competing forces win. TBH I don't believe the thesis, it's bias is set out right from that start. I find it hard to believe this is the definitive article on the Darien Scheme.
The Scottish need to stop blaming the English for all their issues and take responsibility.
Happy to take the responsibility that comes with independence ??????????

The Darien Scheme broke the investors, not Scotland itself. It was this lot that signed up to the union to save themselves, its where the saying “bought and sold for English gold” comes from. The English parliament brought in the Alien Act 1705 to boycott Scottish trade to force the rich Scots to join the union. At that time only rich men could vote and become politicians so the normal people didn’t have a say.
There were riots in the streets of Scotland for years because the ordinary Scots didn’t want the union.

Combined with English financial offers to refund Scottish losses on the Darien scheme, the Act achieved its aim, leading to the Acts of Union 1707 uniting the two countries as the Kingdom of Great Britain.
