So you believe the cyclists are 'asking for it'? After we have clearly established that lorries are unable to see them due to the vehicles limitations, removing those limitations by spending a few hundred quid a lorry (much less than the cost of an accident) according to you is pointless as cyclists would just throw themselves under their wheels.

I have recounted my own experience that lorries do overtake & turn left, I was obviously suicidal being in the lorries way or on the highway at all.

If of course they can see a cyclist and even if the cyclist is being an idiot the lorry driver can stop before killing someone that is the only thing that is important.

Putting reversing kits wouldn't work on all lorries. The reason for that is the cab and trailers are interchangeable, or are you saying you have never seen a HGV cab drive down the road without a trailer?

Fact is if you are scooting down the inside of traffic and approach a left turn you need to be aware someone could turn left onto you.

It will be their fault but that is no consolation if it is your life.

I drive in a number of the larger cities and I can categorically state for a fact that all but a small minority of cyclists abandon their own safety and ride like they are bomb proof. As the footage Sue has posted shows they are oblivious its not that they get out of bed and say I know I will go and piss off some motorists they just don't know they are organ donors.

I know what you are saying about how the Slough Massive drive and I could make a sweeping generalisation about Slough but I just don't want to go there. But needless to say yes I have driven through slough several times and the standard of driving is pretty tulip. So it does not surprise me that you get a rough time riding there.

We have had the clear indication that lorries can't see cyclists for years. It came shortly after the signs on the back of big trucks that said: "If you can't see my mirrors then I can't see you." I don't know why as a car driver I would know that its bloody stupid to be anywhere near the rear left quarter of any vehicle and yet all the precious little lycra bunnies don't know that big wheels squish you.

But I do know that if I am turning left across a cycle lane 9 out of 10 cyclists in the places I drive will still pelt down the inside of me and will completely ignore my flashing indicators. My car is equipped with blind spot assist...

His attitude. I say fix the things you can actually control like the registered & taxed lorries that have poor visibility and are many times more likely to kill cyclists than the far more numerous and faster cars and he said it doesn't matter if you fix the lorries the Cyclists will still try to kill themselves.

it was an example of the cost of adding a retrofit camera. This could be attached to the cab and cover the blind spot that is caused by being 9ft in the air with crap mirrors. They could also mandate blind spot mirrors which cost almost £1 to supply.

if you listen to some of the videos I've linked to it would explain there isn't one blind spot there are several and even if you have mirrors plus a camera to cover them all there is still the issue in urban areas a lorry driver is trying to work out where each of the 3 minimum cyclists have gone in his mirrors and camera then by the time he's worked out those aren't anywhere near another few appear.

You are right I don't think bothering to make lorries safe will help as much as force feeding the cyclists the road craft theory and helping them to better understand risk.

As a motorist I have to look out for your bike when I turn left or right but cyclists are supposed to watch for my indicators and act accordingly.

Most of the time they seem to think buzzing along the side of the car is a fine approach to their own safety.

I was watching a documentary the other month about electric assisted bikes and one of the things the reviewer said was that because it was not such an issue to get back up to speed if you have to stop and therefore she felt safer at not having to try and maintain momentum in potentially dangerous situations.

Add into that that a lot of the cyclists I have observed in Amsterdam tend to be on the sit up and beg type of bikes and not trying to beat a world speed record getting to where they are going.

A lot of people I see are on racing style bikes with racing style lycra and THEY ARE STUCK TO THEIR BIKE WITH THE PEDAL CLIPS and they are not just using it to commute to work they are almost using it as a gym workout/timetrial.

If I put slicks on my motor and straightened every corner I would probably crash but hey that appears to be everyones else fault for not getting out of my way.

I am not saying that therefore motorists should not care but there is only so much you can do about some lycra clad bradley wiggins wannabe doing 35 down the inside of stationary traffic.
