Certainly not helped himself. The book compared to recent accounts of events is different. From what I'd heard on the radio, they were saying that there's no mention of asthma in his book. While it's not a big thing, it's a credit to overcome something like that and become the success he has. By contract, I know Paul Scholes was asthmatic as a kid; while little is made of it, it's never something that was hidden.
