Was booking BA recently. Wanted to fly BA one way and fly back Emirates, various reasons for doing this.

Return flight was around 800£ and one way was 1600£.

God only knows who programmed this in, was it SASGuru?

Someone suggested this was to discourage one way flights, if so, that is one hell of a way of doing it.

It makes perfect sense from a price differentiation perspective. Some people will pay £800 and some more. Those who will only pay £800 are price sensitive and will find the cheaper price.
