Well clearly not and that's the real issue.

It's true of every society in the world, about 50% of the population, cannot with the best will in the world, do the sorts of jobs that pay well in a modern economy.
Not convinced of that at all.

It's mostly a failure of education and a failure of "The System" to nurture talent and ambition. I have worked in many a company, big, small, international & domestic. And we all know that the majority of jobs don't require massive intelligence.

They do require attitude and basic skills.

I'm talking about companies based in London, why on earth would they need languages other than English?
Nope its mathematical/advanced computer/advanced conceptual skills and even personal skills that they can't find in the volume they need.
I suspect if this problem gets harder because of increased paperwork or because the best and brightest don't want to work in what's now perceived to be a xenophobic European backwater, they'll all fook off to Berlin.
Possibly because they are aiming to do business in international markets, and you don't need to be a rocket scientist to realise that it's much easier if you have people who can communicate in the customers language.

Well some communities (Chinese and Indian 1st and 2nd generation immigrants) do well within "The System" which suggests its more a cultural issue. White English working class boys are now bottom of the pile educationally. Personally I blame the parents.

I personally know at least 2 successful entreprenuers in that space and believe me, language skills are the least of their problems.

I'd like to see a Freedom of Movement (for EU citizens and few non-EU) like this:

                    1. If you've a firm job offer, you can enter the country and start working. No quotas, no justification.
                    2. If you haven't a firm job offer, you've got 3 months to look for work, but must no recourse to state funds
                    3. Once you've worked in the country for two years, you become permanent resident with all the benefits that accrue a citizen (except voting rights).
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

Looks goos except 3 is open to abuse as you could easily get a mate to get you a 'job' for 2 years and then you are home free.

Needs to be 5 years and you need to be able to pass a basic citizenship/language test as well.

Also for all those saying business would leave the UK - even in it's current political state (which is about to be resolved) the UK still has a very stable social structure which you do not find in many of the other EU states which makes the UK still an attractive proposition.
