TM is a vessel, like most who make it to PM. She was focused on getting there, not on boxing herself into a set of beliefs that might be misread by a particular voting faction of Tory MPs or members. She'll now need to clarify some of her beliefs, and I think many people (that don't follow politics) are going to be surprised. Many have her pegged, wrongly, as a right winger, based on some of her maneuverings as Home Secretary (which must be seen in the light of her leadership ambitions). She's a pragmatist; a vessel on the sea of public opinion which, post-referendum, is focused on class and other divides.

So any contractors hoping for a benign tax environment should probably look away now

Yep. Some of this will be preparing the ground for business-friendly, counter-cyclical, measures that probably won't benefit contractors (e.g. reduced business rates vs. reduced corporation tax or, if the latter, increased dividend tax), but there are going to be some high-profile (if not particularly revenue raising) measures on avoidance that probably will impact contractors. In that sense, I don't think she's going to be a particularly popular PM around here . Hey ho. One of the difficulties in voting for change is that you never know precisely what sort of change you're going to get. Anyway, putting aside self-interest for a minute, it's about time we began to properly address some of the massive divides between North and South, rich and poor, young and old, that led to the EU ref being used as a vehicle. Cameron was famously an essay-crisis PM, whereas May is likely to be more strategic and, I suspect, will follow through will more concrete policy measures. Fundamentally, they are not different people (both are unashamed pragmatists, not idealist at all), but I think May is more likely to deliver in concrete ways. Afterall, it's pretty clear that she'd been actively planning for this scenario for months, and that's one reason that her competition was left floundering.
