First legal attempt to prevent Brexit

If you are bringing up Brexit again, the referendum commitment was in the manifesto, I'm sure many expected Cameron to win the day (not least of which being Cameron himself). The key point being everyone who voted Tory knew exactly what they were voting for at the time. Whether they are happy with the outcome is clearly questionable, but the risk was always known, and by definition, avoidable. His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain... -
That's not how we do things in Blighty. I can appreciate the concept of democracy is a bit of a new thing for you, and to be honest, we claim to have practically invented it, but we still haven't fully mastered it, but that's sort of how sh1te works.Originally posted by AtW View PostReferendum should have much higher power than any elected politician - direct expression of peoples will is sacred.
What should not happen however is getting simple majority for really big decisions: 2/3s for Constitutional matters is a must. His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...Comment

Alex, I've just re-read what I wrote, and it was intended to be sarcastic, but certainly not insulting. Sounds sort of sensible in theory but is it practical? In practice it will pretty much negate any referendum and make it pointless.Referendum should have much higher power than any elected politician - direct expression of peoples will is sacred.

Actually, I think a problem in human society is the way it swings from one extreme to another and this is mainly due to lack of consultation, one political view holds sway for far too long and becomes extreme. Valid concerns are ignored and resentment grows. Then, when something happens that lets people see chance for a change, these pent up resentments cause an extreme overreaction.
I think we would be far better off with a lot more democracy, give people a chance to determine their own future no matter how small the majority. Then we have minor ripples instead of these major tsunamis but the mean trend will remain the same.bloggoth

It's a few years old, but this research paper on referendums and majorities is quite interesting:
