Apparently the car did have some kind of forward radar or laser ranging device. But this only detected, or the car only took note of, objects in a horizontal plane (parallel to the car's frame). So this artic that pulled out of nowhere, being higher than the car (well, not entirely higher unfortunately!) was literally "off the radar".

1) Very irresponsible for Tesla to push this totally not ready for prime time autonomous driving - their USP is electic car rather than autonomous car, it's too soon, especially with radars not being up to the task
2) Totally stupid for the users to activate it and not fully control road, personally I don't even use cruise control - DRIVER MUST be in control at all times in the vehicleComment

I'd imagine half the sensors getting ripped out might mess up the system somewhat....Originally posted by VectraMan View PostI like the fact the autopilot didn't notice the collision, or that the roof had been ripped off. But then still managed to crash.
Still a huge fan - the guy should have stood on the brake. That said, if a lorry pulled out on anyone at highway speeds there is no guarantee youd be ok.Comment
