I'm in my 40s and I'm almost done with contracting and possibly IT altogether.

I thought that then as well, I am now 56 and IT is still feeding the household.
This contracting lark has actually breathed a new lease of life into the way I operate though so I reckon I can put up with it for another 4 years or so then I can semi retire.

I packed in contracting in November 2014 (never say never but no intention of going back).

It's been said hundreds of times per year since I started in '94 that contracting has changed and is fu**ed. I genuinely believe that it is now. A few people will still make reasonable money at it, but in general terms it's fu**ed.

This is something I never understood. I graduated in electronic engineering in er .. 98 and (120 started the course in 94/95.. 30'something graduated! - remember one guy coming in for a morning lecture 'this is doing my head in' and left! A few folk just couldn't hack it) half of us that graduated jumped on the IT bandwagon and the remainder followed a career in 'real' engineering. 'IT' din't exist when I started the course. Yet the rate people were throwing established engineering to one side in favour of it was astounding. It was clear to me this subject matter might go as quick as it came. I think that's beginning to happen.

A rich guy from the UK coming over, taking up a place of somwehere to stay, and giving them advice is probably about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. Unless you have hitherto secret skills that you can put to practical use then you may be best off either just taking a holiday or working and giving money to experts who know what they are doing.
