But it's documented on the man page, as it's specific to that command rather than being a generic thing:

                Code:
-R Attempt to remove the file hierarchy rooted in each file argument.
The -R option implies the -d option. If the -i option is speci-
fied, the user is prompted for confirmation before each direc-
tory's contents are processed (as well as before the attempt is
made to remove the directory). If the user does not respond
affirmatively, the file hierarchy rooted in that directory is
                                 skipped.

                -r Equivalent to -R.

It is whispered by some be-cardiganed, bearded, Polyvelt-shod, device-driver-writing, Al Stewart listening unix wizards, after 2 or 3 real ales, that rm -rf doesn't work in /, that there is some mysterious handbrake built into the kernel or somewhere, that kicks in to save you at the last moment. IIRC this is just in Linux, not Solaris or other Unixes. Or both. Or was a relatively recent invention. Or may not exist. I prefer to leave the truth undiscovered, a mystery, sort of like the Loch Ness monster. Which definitely exists.

                    History has proved otherwise. Alas.
