    I manage resources in India. A new (male)one kept calling me "Dear". I felt I ought to explain to him that this was not culturally appropriate.

    Maybe I should have sued?

            Nah. You should have encouraged it by calling him "Love" or "Duck" in response showing you were in touch with your feminine side....

              Interestingly, it turns out calling someone "love" where the correct word is "duck" is punishable by being told to get out of Stoke-On-Trent......

              Not that that is much punishment......
