I got one gig through it although that was actually with a previous client, because they had lost my personal email and were trying to find me to offer me work

I got friended by this total AIX geek from USA, bangs on about 'What your Hypervisor is doing' and 'Leveraging the kernel debugger', Christ he's boring. I usually join in his discussions with 'WGAS' but he's never deterred. Don't think he knows what it means.

One resason I don't bother using any of these social media things is that to look at someone's profile they insist you log in.

But when you log in, they doubtless send a message to the person saying in effect "Someone called OwlHoot checked your profile".

which makes discrete and anonymous checking (not "stalking") impossible!

I think you can view LI profiles without logging in, or used to be able to - I'm sure they used to come up on Google searches. If you ARE logged in then LI definitely tell users who has viewed their profile. FB et al obviously track that information but do not make it available... "Dave just spent 12 minutes looking at photos of you in a bikini"

You can turn if off so it doesn't show, green light for stalking!

As much as people hate LinkedIn, agents use it to look for people. If you're looking for work then it would be stupid not to use a free channel, that you know agents use, to promote yourself.

There are ways to do an in-depth search of LinkedIn profiles, including any attachments that people have on their profiles, without it showing up.
