Middle-class workers who 'manipulate' price comparison sites to get cheap insurance quote face crackdown

Middle-class workers who "game" the insurance system using price comparison websites will face a new crackdown under plans being considered by ministers.

The Insurance Fraud Task Force, an official body set up by the Government, has recommended that price comparison websites should refer "suspicious" activity to insurance companies.

It is concerned that some people are illegally "manipulating" their details on the websites to obtain the cheapest quote possible.

The task force found that up to a third of motorists believe it is acceptable to "omit or adjust data" to reduce their car insurance premiums.

It said that while in some cases this can be part of a "legitimate effort to shop around", in others it is a "tell-tale sign of fraud" such as the deliberate omission of driving offences.

The report states that at present the exchange of "anti-fraud data" between price comparison websites and insurers is "minimal".

However Go Compare, one of the biggest price comparison websites, said that "genuine and honest customers" who legitimately tweak their details to gain better quotes must not be affected.

Apparently the most common fraud in the country is lying about where you park the car. On the drive when it's on the street, or in the garage when it's on the drive.

That's fine until the car gets stolen using your keys and the garage has a lock/remote that hasn't been touched....

If they got the keys, they'd get remote to open doors on them too...

The biggest legitimate annual saving that people can make is by changing their job title for a similar one in the same profession. A quote of £487 is given for a "fashion photographer" with One Call Insurance, whereas a "photographer" can save £127.
Then it's the insurers that need a spanking for having such widely differing rates for job descriptions. The customer is doing nothing wrong here.

Even modifying convictions information - that might factor into whether to accept a course instead of points. Nothing wrong in checking consequences of your actions.

Maybe if they are worried about insurance fraud they could prosecute those that raise insurance renewals by 50% and then drop it when you threaten to leave. Pretty much every insurer would be in jail.

Insurance is null & void if you omit offences. You would be unlikely to get a decent price for any future insurance.

Titles well they should use better ones and have decent descriptions.
Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.

Exactly! So why should insurance companies really worry about if they can legally deny insurance claim to those who lied in original application?

Not necessarily - insurers aren't stupid.

I use to be with an insurer who didn't distinguish by job role. So as long as you weren't a delivery driver or one of the other random professions they didn't insure, then your job was ignored.

They decided to get out of the insurance market when the EU ruling came in about not being able to charge different rates for men and women. (People forget that while young women were charged less for insurance, older women were charged more.)
