Scurvy does occur in newborns sometimes if the mother takes too many vitamin C pills during pregnancy, but outside of that insanely rare situation I can't imagine how you'd not get enough vitamin C... it's in everything - there's more vitamin C in a bag of walkers crisps than there is in most pieces of fruit!

Mother (probably dad too) had a history of mental illness and the kid was home-schooled so social services couldn't get involved. Sad, but not much anyone could have done...

They should have spent some of the cash they saved from supplying a school place and done quarterly inspections on his progress. Should be the same for everyone who is home schooled. Parents who don't like it can't home school.

Perhaps, but given the cutbacks in social services I don't see how that would have happened, not to mention which, in Scotland at least, social workers don't get a look in at home schooled kids automatically. There would have had to be a report of neglect and given they thought the kid just had "growing pains" they clearly didn't take him to a GP until it was too late.
