IIRC, over £50,000 you have to go through a special claims procedure, and over some higher amount you have to go there in person with proof of ID (though I think they can make arrangements to meet you elsewhere, but you get the money faster if you go to them). But this meant that it was postdated, as it had the date of the broadcast on it so it could be shown to the camera during the show. So he ended up with a cheque for £250,000 bearing Chris Tarrant's signature which was just left on the side in his kitchen for a month, occasionally causing minor panic when it was lost before being found again under one of the kids' toys or some such
