      I once saw some bozo on the telly assert that Watford Gap was so named because the M1 had been built to bridge a gap in the road network between Watford and The North. Um, no, it's because the place is called Watford Gap. It's a gap in the hills adjacent to the village of Watford, which just happens to have the same name as a place near London

      Also, the supposed gap in the road network was filled some time ago by the Romans when they built Watling Street.
