Why is losing weight more difficult now?

Losing weight was easier in the 1980s than it is now - Telegraph

Cos we're all 30 years older?

It's a fascinating area but we might need a deeper source than the Telegraph to trust the story

Sounds like a BS conclusion by not considering some lifestyle confounding factors, I would guess it's something like the following:

May be comparing amount of exercise and calorie intake but would amount of daily (non exercise) activity be the same? In 70s/80s more manual jobs, more walking to shops, more doing cleaning, DIY, hand washing the car, must be a few 1000 cals there

Also would imagine people ate at more regular (earlier) times in 80s

Would that be BS if the factor was that we lead more sedentary lifestyles? Or even that our work is less physical... that's harder to address.

If you have to do 45min extra dedicated exercise a day just to get to what your parents did before they exercised, it's a 'real thing' even if not as exciting.

I thought I was a fatty because I ate more calories than I needed

That shock discovery wouldn't sell newspapers though

I am watching with interest the missus starting another fad diet, strange how it never works in the long term
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

You clearly didn't read the article because nowhere is that claim refuted.

Indeed and that's really the start and end of the discussion. People seem intent on finding increasingly bizarre explanations for why as a nation we're getting fatter, when it is a pretty simple equation really: calories in - calories used = net weight gain/loss.

If you want to look more deeply then yes it's probably happening because we have things like supermarkets where you can buy everything from vegetables to clothes and electronics all under one roof - no more walking the streets to buy your weekly necessities. People using cars/buses more now so less walking or cycling. Increased availability of high calorie foods like McDonald's, KFC etc. and my biggest bug-bear of all, people's refusal to look in the mirror, realize there's a problem and do something about it.
