The British government sought to block new EU legislation that would force member states to carry out surprise checks on the emissions of cars, raising fresh questions over ministers’ attitude to air pollution and their conduct in the Volkswagen scandal.

The Department for Transport has announced that it will conduct its own investigation into car emissions, the latest twist in the Volkswagen scandal.
The UK regulator, the Vehicle Certification Agency, will re-run lab tests and compare them to 'real-world' emissions.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “The government takes the unacceptable actions of VW extremely seriously. My priority is to protect the public as we go through the process of investigating what went wrong and what we can do to stop it happening again in the future.”
“We have called on the EU to conduct a Europe wide investigation into whether there is evidence that cars here have been fitted with defeat devices. In the meantime we are taking robust action. The Vehicle Certification Agency, the UK regulator, is working with vehicle manufacturers to ensure that this issue is not industry wide.”“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”Comment

I might be missing the point. But law creation and law enforcement are two entirely separate concerns.Comment

The jury is still out on the polluting factors of diesel engines. The often quoted figures of 25000 extra deaths through NO2 are from one paper and subject to great uncertainty.
Funny thing is that if you tax diesel more, that encourage more people to use petrol. But since diesel is produced along with petrol in a fairly fixed proportion, that just causes a glut of diesel on the market and consequently lower taxes... making diesel attractive once more.
Diesel engines are amazing. So much less complex than petrol, so longer lasting, and more efficient.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment
