Hard to imagine how such things can happen on this scale. Surely if people are being pushed they will push back, if those pushing are not getting anywhere they are going to stop? Doesn't make any sense to me.

In crowds of thousands (approx 2 million hajji each year - I don't know how many in this specific crowd) a few people pushing back makes feck all difference.

Think of all the football stadium tragedies - there doesn't have to be anything malicious just thousands of people eagerly trying to get somewhere can end up in people getting dead.
