I've got a dual boot Windows 7/Ubuntu desktop PC and linux is so much quicker. Unless I need Windows specific apps I'll let Ubuntu load up.

Quite so. I'm on Mint 17.2. It hardly registers any load on my my 8-core / 8GB laptop. Unlike the Windows 8 distribution that came with it. This often happens when you install Linux on a modern PC. They are dimensioned for windows - very bloated and slow - and so are over specced for Linux.

Applying the same principle you'd also find that the ZX Spectrum OS would run really fast on an 8-core i7 PC.
