Les Price has always been “a big lad” but after injuring his back at work nine years ago, his weight rocketed from 23st to 35st.
“I was always 4st heavier than my friends growing up,” he confesses. “My parents took me to the dietician, who said it was just puppy fat. Now I’m the biggest puppy you’ll find. You get the stares, the sniggers. Kids are innocent but they’ll say: ‘Mam, look at that fat man!’ It used to really upset me.”
Les, 45, who lives with his partner and stepdaughter in Llanhilleth, south Wales, hasn’t worked since the accident and claims £300 per month in disability living allowance.
“I’d like to get back into work but I haven’t applied for jobs because I’m not able to
work with my back pain,” says Les, who has diabetes. “Employers think I’m a liability. If I fell, who’s going to pick me up? I had a fall the other week and I had to get myself up using a chair and the settee; it took 45 minutes.
