22 years ago I got my first contract with 3.5 years experience. It was with a niche legacy mainframe, and I was one of only about 5 contractors in the country with any experience and willing to work wherever for £10 an hour....

So I guess 3.5 years experience is ok if it is very specialist knowledge. I'd suggest another 5 years and branching out into other things would be the best way of getting into contracting

21 years ago I started contracting immediately after leaving uni. But this was at the very beginning of the Internet and there was about 6 people who knew how cgi worked

I can safely say it was for more than £10 an hour though

I went into consulting from Uni, easier to go into contracting from there.
