Overweight IT Contractors' weight loss diary: day 1
95% of those attempting to lose weight fail. That implies it's not simple. I'm in the other 5% myself, but based on my experience, anyone who says it's simple hasn't done it.
Also, exercise is worth doing for various reasons, but unless you're doing 80 lengths of an Olympic pool a day it's probably not going to make much difference, people should concentrate on the food side of the equation.
4k is a lot for most people (warm up for me), I'd be surprised if most could do it.
back to the point
your talking bo11ocks. 20 / 30 mins of gently exercise (raised HR to 65% of max) a day will be significantly benificial to just about anyone.
Your parents ruin the first half of your life and your kids ruin the second half

It is simple in it's execution. It's difficult to implement a strict regime to a diet in the "modern" day as is the simple understanding of metabolism.
You have to make time for regular exercise. I cycle each day to do odd jobs like shopping, post etc Any excuse come rain or shine.
You have to say no to the majority mid-week curries.
You have to ditch the processed foods like crips, packaged sandwiches, microwaved convenient foods, puddings, biscuits, processed bread, red meat etc and eat more fresh fruit, fish, fresh pasta and vegetables. Processed foods contain more fat than you could possibly imagine (let alone any of the other cr@p they put in) and having the same physical amount of natural food would instantly be a step in the right direction.
Drop your portion sizes. It is quite amazing how some people fill a plate of food each night like Mr Greedy at the Harvester salad bar.
Take the stairs everywhere you can.
Try and reduce your alcohol intake. If you abstain for long periods of time you find you only need a couple of glasses to send you off into netherland at night.
Avoid stupid fad diets and Weightwatchers.
Have a cholesterol and blood pressure test if you need motivation. Our industry has a high propensity for heart disease due to it's potentially sedentary lifestyle AND STRESS.
Bottles of wine are my weakness, but if I didn't do the above I'm sure I would be dead fairly quickly working in IT, especially as there is a history of heart disease in my family. I still enjoy all my food as you know, but controlling the saturated fat content in my meals by avoiding processed food is an easy win.
If you think my attitude stinks, you should smell my fingers.
Ok, so I am overweight. And no this is not threaded. You probably are also overweight, but just in denial. Most likely you are married or "test please delete" thread sums up your sex life. Unlike you I decided to do something about it.
Avoid drinking a bottle of vodka every day.
Nazdarovija....
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.
hyperD - is red wine less fattening than beer? I have not heard about wine belly...
Red wine has lower calories per se but it is the alcohol content in drinks that provide the potential calories.
Also beer is relatively high in sugars/carbs and is drunk in larger quantities so yes, overall wine is "better" for you.
Also red (and to a degree white) wine contains statin equivalents that may help lower cholesterol. And the great thing is red wine can help to reduce your stress levels in moderation.
Paradoxically eating more often helps you lose weight faster than just eating less. Yes you need to consume fewer calories but you also need to eat more often. Between meals your metabolism slows down and you consume less energy. By eating more often your metabolism has less chance to slow down since it is constantly having to process food into a usable form, which takes energy which burns off calories.
Eating smaller meals and snacking on healthy stuff like fruit, raw veggies or low calorie snacks in between meals is much better than just eating less overall.
I read somewhere that eating celery consumes more energy than the celery actually contains.
So AtW, all you need do is buy in a hundredweight of celery and munch the stuff all day every day until you're as thin as a whippet.
I exercise a minimum of 2 hours a day, everyday. Usually it is my daily bicycle commute, 60+km round trip, which I do around the 2 hour mark. At the weekends I garden and chop up logs with a rather lovely axe and spike collection I've built up.
And I've taken up the rather fun sport of cyclo-cross racing, at which it appears I'm not a complete muppet.
