You'll need that 5-hour layover to get through the queue at the border control only to pick up your bags, re-check them, and join another queue.

      Florida in August.

      height of hurricane season.

dog days of heat and killer humidity

      torrential rain almost daily

blistering sun when its not raining.

its the wrong time for a holiday.

back out and go in winter, have a better time and save a further 1200 quid

January-April is the peak season for internal travel to Florida so there are deals to be had in the summer months if you look for indirect flights which is what the OP has done.

I was touring the everglades during September and there was not many US people on the road ... mainly Europeans and South Americans. The humidity was horrible on the gulf coast (Naples) ... never experienced anything quite like that outside of a rain forest.

November is a good time to go as the humidity has gone and the temps and weather is still great. I was in Fort Lauderdale last year for the thanksgiving long weekend and would recommend it.

Why do people go to Florida ?

Serious question. What is the attraction ?

            Hot weather
            cracking thunderstorms
            theme parks
            clearwater beach

We have family in the USA and we meet up there and get a big villa every 2-3 years, usually in August, usually for 3 weeks...

              Disney and Universal.

And the beaches are nice in the right places and the right times - you should go for Spring break

We have been 3 times so far.
The first time in May and it was to take the kids to disney. They loved it.
2nd/3rd time we went in July and we focused on the Harry Potter sections, shows etc..

If we were going back we would go for May again. It was quieter and nowhere near as hot.

No, but when not going to Florida we go to Spain or France which makes up for it. Although it's generally the ones you wished had stayed covered up that dont...
