    Looks like they already have....

One of the most densely populated countries in Europe is the Netherlands but is not exactly an unpleasant place to live, in fact it's rather nice place to live. Very popular destination for contractors.

The UK is not particularly highly populated, it is comparable with Germany or Switzerland even after all the immigration in the 2000's. Guernsey and Jersey have a much higher population density than the UK, but yet they're still popular holiday destinations. It also has a lower population density than Japan.

The Netherlands work pretty well in spite of having almost double the population density of the UK. Jersey has almost three times the population, and should be "bursting to the seams". It's therefore unlikely that immigration in the UK will actually cause in any problems in the forseeable future.

Labour introduced the points based system for skilled workers and got rid of work permit system. With work permits, you had to advertise a job and then hire from abroad if you could not fill the position. A lot of hassle and it did the work.

The points based system was where a skilled worker had to show some official documents and scored the points required and got a visa to come in without a job. The main problem was, once they got in, they were desperate to take up a job at any wage thus massively driving down the IT wages. I dont think we have yet recovered from that.

The points based system which was obviously flawed was closed by Tories but they have now discovered the Entrepreneur visa . They are getting the visa and coming in and setting up a Ltd company and contracting at dirt cheap rates.

They tend to do their initial contract at low rates but quickly learn what charlatans agencies are.

The idea that IT salaries in the UK are low due to immigration is a bit of a myth. I work in Germany where salaries are a bit lower than they are in the UK, and they are certainly not swamped with cheap qualified IT labour, it usually takes several months to fill a position.

Found this statistic which confirms this:

Computer Programmer Average Salary Income - International Comparison

If you did restrict immigration salaries wouldn't go up you would just find that companies that couldn't find people would either just not expand their businesses or move into an offshore arrangement with companies in countries where these excluded immigrants went to.

The world is a big place, qualified IT people will find work if not in the UK then simply elsewhere.

You can't atrificially raise salaries by blocking immigration. It's a nice simple argument, if you restrict competition then the UK then computer programmers can simply raise their rates and "make hay". The reality is companies have access to a worldwide market for IT resources. If your rate is high they'll set up an arrangement with an offshore co. in the Ukraine for example and then dump you.

Why should we increase the numbers of our population just because the Australians do? Just because other countries are more densely populated than ourselves why should we be obliged to follow them? Can we not just say our country as it is a better country to live in than the Netherlands, Botswana, Qatar , North Korea or Australia and feel lucky and proud that we are in it rather than seek to undermine it by saying we should copy countries that none of us would want to live in anyway?

No you're quite right we don't need to, but the reason we have immigration is not driven by "wanting immigration" it's driven by people wanting to retire and still wanting to get on a bus somewhere because there is someone to drive it, or ring up a plumber and plumber comes because there is a plumber.

Very simple terms but that's why we have immigration. The Japanese have less immigration but 70 something year olds are perfectly happy to get up at 6 and go and do back breaking work in the fields. That's the way they are. Our 70 something year olds want to put their feet up, drink beer and read the Daily Mail. The Japanese save money and buy government bonds, the Brits squander on beer on foreign holidays, so we need immigrants to keep the businesses going to fund the shortfall.

In other words if you have an aging population provided the older people are happy to get up at 6 in the morning to keep the buses on the road and the strawberries in the Supermarket we can do away with immigration. You also need a population of young people not racking up massive personal debt. I just don't see that happening.

Also with regard to the Channel Islands, they have fairly strict entry criteria, and they don't have very generous benefits systems at all. Although they do have a very generous tax regime. Things they get right, IMO.

                    Because that's not true.

It depends who you are and the lifestyle you want.

The average Brit seems to want to live in countries with more sunny weather like Oz there as the elite who can live in multiple countries don't fancy Oz so much.

Even North Korea is great for some people i.e. Kim Jong Un.
