As an aside, I can't get over the sorts of people voting green round where I live (well, I can - it's just how they conform to the stereotype that I can't get over).

Those "Join the Green Surge" stickers are popping up on the rear windows of Volvo Estates all over the place. Volvo estates driven by smug, middle class downshifters who live in big, draughty houses and drive an inordinate number of miles every day to drop their kids off at school.

I reckon voting Green amongst those sorts must be some kind of exercise in vanity; I mean their lifestyles in no way chime with the those being promoted by the loonies in the Green Party

She WAS someone living on benefits and having to stretch every penny to feed herself and her son, she's probably far better acquainted with such people, and the reality of living on the poverty line, than either of us. Crass generalisations about those on benefits tend to demonstrate classist bias.

I don't particularly like the woman or agree with what she says but I hardly think the label "champagne socialist" applies in her case.

A couple of years ago, Monroe left her job at the Essex Fire Brigade, as the stress of bringing up her son, Jonny, now three, as a single mother working irregular night shifts was making both of them ill. It meant losing a £27,000 income — and selling everything they owned in order to make ends meet.

she was an 'emergency dispatcher' her father was a firefighter.

As you point out though D000hg however is wrong as usual, she decided she didn't want to work and wanted us to support her. Unlike the thousands of single parents who manage to keep kids & a job.

It hardly contradicts Littlejohns attack on her. She is still an "entitled" leftie

I didn’t sail out of the door for a life on benefits, I left to find a job closer to home, with better hours more suited to bringing up a young child alone. It took 18 months for me to find that job, and hundreds of applications, but I did it. And that’s what sticks in your craw, isn’t it? Because in order to satisfy the stereotype that you peddle day in day out in the rag currently lining my ferret cage, I should have stayed feckless and unemployed, and not tried to feed myself and my son decent nutritious meals, nor had the audacity to write about it.

She still left her job and let the state pay for her. It wasn't even as if she was made redundant.
