Back in the 80s someone in my local pub found out that displaying a false number carried a piddly little fine, something like 5 or 15 quid.

He picked a desirable number but got caught pretty quickly. Maybe he bragged about it too much.

I doubt you could get away with it nowadays with all these number plate recognition thingies around.
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

German number plates consist of either 1, 2 or 3 letter indicating the district, i.e F for Frankfurt, FÜ for Fürth or WAN for Herne followed by 1 or 2 letters which normally indicate an area in that district and then 1 to 4 numbers. This can lead to some good combinations although some are banned, i.e. S for Stuttgart followed by S or LM for Limburg followed by AA (LMAA means Leck mich am Arsch - kiss my arse) although I have seen that on older vehicles.
Swiss number plates are boring in contrast. They are basically the 2 letter Canton mnemonic followed by a sequential number, and you get to keep the same number for life.

This means that you can roughly guess the age of the registered owner from the number I got one which is about right for my age.

There is of course a market for low numbers. Families are allowed to pass these down through generations but ones that come free go up for auction.

The local authorities have quite a few low numbers, presumably because they were the original owners. I saw AG 1 on a very nice BMW police car driven by obviously senior officers.

I've seen a taxi with the plate 1 XAT which seemed reasonable, a Porsche with A 911 ONO. And a sad consultant with R 3 SAP in the SAP training centre carpark.

In the car park at the retail outlet for scan.co.uk in Bolton, I saw MST3K, which I thought was rather niche.

I've seen L 1 FTS, which I believe belonged to someone who did stairlifts for disabled and old folk.

His reputation was up there with double glazing salesmen ;(
