Wouldn't worry. Given recent GCSE and A-Levels figures..women are dropping out of IT like nobody's business.

The younger ones seem to be fine, its the middleage ones that get back to work after their kids grow up and they seem to have some big chip on their shoulder !

Would go permie if we needed the money ! Which is to say that at the moment I have the flexibility of working when I need to and making some very good money for savings etc, but we can survive without it as my wife has a solid well paid permie job. However, if the situation changed and I needed to get a guaranteed wage in to pay bills etc, then I would try and go permie if I could, or preferably try and get a long term contract (probably inside IR35). Trouble is, employers are cagey about ex-contractors.
It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. www.areyoupopular.mobi

            Because :-

            - they think you've made loadsa money while they haven't
            - they think you'll stay for 6 months, pick up some new skills and leave to go contracting
            - they don't trust you to be a good employee because you've been independent
            - etc

Best way is to get a good longer term contract and to get in good with the management... then let them take you permie. If you really want that, that is.

Does anyone worry about being over 40 and going as a contractor?

Although, even that doesn't make too much sense as in case of redundancies even as a permie the over 40s are the first on the line.
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Nope. In fact I won't hire contractors with less than 15 years of relevant experience.
