Is this enough to halt the trend of pub closures?

When I was 16 I use to lie about my age and would sit in pubs with my friends'. You would behave so you wouldn't get chucked out. They would ID us about twice a year and we shared ID as it didn't need to be photo Id.

Basically the pub taught us how to drink responsibly.

      In a word: "e"

Young people these days would rather skip the pub and wait until later in the evening, then pop a modestly priced e and breeze around some nightclub in an agreeable haze until 2am.

When I was in Dublin never saw a boarded up pub and my local was full every night

Then again, there were no mega supermarkets and hardly any newsagents flogging cheap tinnies...

Most have multiple bars and they could control the times at which booze is sold and when coffee is served

One of the pubs near me is basically a coffee house during the day. It's full of mothers and their brats.

Another is now an Indian restaurant. About 3 people went bankrupt trying to run it as a pub.

A few others have been turned into Tescos Expresses or estate agents after bankrupting a few people who tried to run them as pubs.

Another pub has reopened as a pub but now sells meals and concentrates on mothers and brats in the day.

My local brewery Brains now owns a coffee franchise that is separate to its pubs.

The only pubs that always seem to be busy are the ones that do decent food. One local one has a bbq popup restaurant every thurs-sat and it's booked up for the duration.

Thanks to the supermarkets the newsagents on my road are now off licenses and convenience food shops.

The price of their alcohol is often cheaper than the supermarket.

                  You sound very bitter, Sue.

Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

Sue is right. Children are brats. Except for my 3 little darlings that is.
