France (and Belgium) yes, it is a national holiday. They have the blue cornflower - Bleuet de France - as opposed to the poppy.

Germany, no not on 11/11 anyway. They have Volkstrauertag on diff date.

A poor excuse. Most people have smartphones with built in reminder functionality they use daily for "Drinks after work" type reminders.

Very poignant and I think anyone who has died for their country deserves to be remember and treated with respect regardless of the political reasons they were fighting.
