He is a cheat who managed to get away with lots of nasty stuff, luckily recently they started cracking down on him, like that case when he parked car to prevent everyone beating his time.
Think that's the prevailing view. We all remember that barging our own thingy/whatsit off the track when he looked like getting the series winning race. Can't see him emulating the popularity of Boris Becker in the UK somehow. Many would switch off of he was commentating on a race event.

They all push the envelope. In today's race Alonso was penalised ten places for doing a similar thing and blocking Massa. I remember the good old days when Prost and Senna deliberately ran each other off the road in successive years on the first bend in Japan, to stop the other bloke winning.
Schumacher is one of the greatest F1 driver ever. He gave a barely-known team two world championships, then sorted out Ferrari who'd been an absolute rabble for 20 years.
Seems to me it was a lot due to Ferrari's hardware - under new rules they were not doing well despite having him.
Eh? What was different about the new hardware they had when he started driving for them, and the new hardware they had for each of the previous 17 years?
He is certainly no Senna.
And why would that be? Do you mean he hasn't killed himself yet? That he's not Brazilian? In which case he isn't Gilles Villeneuve or Mauricio Gugelmin either!

Ok, lets say hardware stayed the same so all Ferrari gains were due to him.
Now, how would you explain last year's performance of Ferrari's team? The hardware was different due to rules change. Shum was the same, why they struggled big time then?

He'd just won an unprecedented fifth title in a row. Are you saying that by missing out on a sixth he was not all he was cracked up to be?
I am looking at cause and effect. It is known that last season Ferrari was sh1t - nothing like it was before. What changed?
Shum was the same driver who won it so well before, so suppose its a "no change" here.
Hardware was different - big changes for all teams, but Ferrari clearly did worse than others.
Suddenly Shum did not win title - this sure makes wonder to what degree driver actually influences the outcome, suppose in Shum's case it is a fair amount since he is just a cheat that should have been thrown out in disgrave.
Rather boring really - cricket issues are much more interesting.

Strictly Alonso was penalised 5 places. He was put to the back of the final group. I think Alonso was probably unfairly penalised - it would appear that Massa had to lift in the Parabolica due to the windwash. however I suspect that this was probably more than outweighed by the tow he got.
I would have liked to see Raikonnen and Shumi in the same car though.
