Mansion Tax was mooted by both Labour and LibDems and would be an annual charge. The new tax in Scotland only applies when the house is bought.

Well it's no surprise that the "hate the rich" (read: middle class/anyone not on benefits) champagne socialist crowd proposed it. Even within Labour there is strong dissent over it, though, so it may just remain a lofty pipedream. This country has an addiction to property bubbles, after all, and I am sure Labour will want one of its own come GE.

I think this property tax is fair and progressive. You can't see that because you are a unionist who hates everything the SNP does. If Labour or the Tories came up with this idea you would be saying how great it was.

SNP membership has just gone over 80,000 and a rally in George Square on Sunday is expecting at least 6,000 people.

I meant progressive as in forward looking rather than in step changes.

This is nothing more than simply a rejigging of stamp duty bands and percentages. And on the whole, I think it's quite a reasonable adjustment - removing the cliff edge changes is a good one.

The SNP are not progressive - the best they can do is ape the Lib and Lab in a variation of the mansion tax.
Income tax is the best way to 'progressively' and fairly raise taxes. An arbitrary tax on property makes little sense other than to raise taxes on the perceived rich rather than explicitly raising income tax.

If they had any b@lls they'd raise income tax, explain that the extra money will be directed to hospitals and schools and then go to the polls with it at the next Scottish elections. They won't, because, in the end, they are (nearly) as sh1t as the other parties.

It's a 'new' tax because it's the first tax to be levied by a Scottish Parliament since 1707.
