      I don't much care for Salmond - I think he's dishonest - but I think this may be correct. The movement for Scottish independence has been going on for many many years, and Salmond has achieved a referendum with a reasonable (c. 25% if we are to believe the bookies) chance of success, and failure will still lead to a strong call for devo max. That is good politics.

        actually agree, you may not like the guy but he has proven effective.

          Indeed. How do you measure the success of a politician other than their ability to convince idiots of something that flies in the face of all common sense? If it wasn't Salmond, it might well be Farrage. Though if Hitler were still around neither would have stood a chance.
