Taxiing to the 'runway' for a flight from a Maldivian island to Male, the pilot announced that we would be temporarily delayed as there was a school of dolphins in our way.

Personally, I'd go with school - herd or team just don't sound right, and a pod is more appropriate to whales (IMHO).
