App works fine for me on the nexus 5. Have some updates to push up, that might fix your nexus crashing. I have the main tapatalk app too and don't find it too onerous to make a couple of clicks to open the app or toggle between them. The interstitial ad that loads on app start up is a bit intrusive and to be honest we added it to see what the feedback was like and this is only the second time I have seen it mentioned, and then it was you, Alias, who said about it before. Not sure about the posting of images, will have a look at that one now as need to run updates for it again.
If there were enough people saying about the interstitial then wouldn't have a problem removing it.
why cant we get rid of all the app nonsense and just write html that will render usable pages on a mobile device....
Long story!!
When the forum was initially set up with VBulletin it was v3. IE6 was a big slice of the browser market and the templating was pretty much table based.
We upgraded to VB4 about 5 years ago I think. It was nice. Proper new and shiny templates. Divs and everything! I was very impressed!! Until we launched it and realised that about 50% of the people who used the forum were still on IE6. We had neglected to test on IE6, queue much wailing and gnashing of teeth... Mobile use then was nothing like it is now. Think I got my first 'droid phone maybe a month or so before that so responsive design and development as we know it now had not yet smacked me in the face.
Due to the backlash of the last forum upgrade, I have kind of put off doing the next upgrade and the tapatalk thing was / is a good intermediate stage for us. It means we can have a nice mobile experience without the ball ache of having to upgrade the core system and the PITA that is involved with that in terms or redoing the skins and the complaints that tend to accompany forum upgrades.
VBulletin is now responsive and also been looking at Xenforo, which is also mobile friendly from the off. So not sure what the life-span of the app is as we may well bite the bullet of upgrading again in the near future. In all honesty I still love the app when out and about, it is quick and easy and, like the rest of the site, a few little ads for the completely free use of the site is a niggle not worth getting niggled about from my point of view... I did wonder if the interstitial was a step too far though!
As you said though portseven, the easiest route for all is site that works on desktop and mobile without the need for apps. One day we will reach platform zen. But until then we make do with the shit: we have to hand
