In these days of internet and mobile banking, is it still appropriate to refer to public holidays as 'Bank Holidays'? After all you can get quite a lot of banking done online on Monday. Maybe they should now be called 'High street bank holidays?

It's nothing to do with banking institutions.Originally posted by sirja View PostIn these days of internet and mobile banking, is it still appropriate to refer to public holidays as 'Bank Holidays'? The word comes from the start of the Industrial revolution when barges were towed by horses.
On some sunny days the horses and men took the day off , mainly due to hangovers from Sunday.
They lazed on the canal bank - hence 'bank holidays'(\__/)

Most of the clientcos I've had in the last decade don't take Bank Holidays, the permies have the days added to their annual entitlement instead. It's good for the contractors who don't need to lose a day's pay unless they want the day off.
Then a couple of years ago, about 8 weeks in at a new clientco, I found out just the week before that the Monday was a holiday and the place was closed. I always book flights & hotels for about 6 weeks in advance so rather than pay extra to change I flew down on the Monday as planned. As things would have it, everything went quicker than normal and I was at the client's site by 09:30. I got an early entry to my hotel room to dump my gear and headed up to London for the day. Luckily it was sunny and hot so I had a few pints sitting in the sun.
I always ask a client before I start if they close for Bank Holidays now.

My current Clientco doesn't observe Bank Holidays but the airline I'm using have withdrawn the morning flight so I will have an extra day with my woman.
Though in other news I have completely buggered my back strimming my overgrown lawn so I'm going nowhere. This is the worst pain I've endured since Slipped Disc 2003.Comment
