Such as "Saddam Hussein has WMDs that will reach us in 45 minutes we must invade Iraq immediately"

Your "credible news that is well-researched by journalists" has been shown up time and again as 'fake news' which loses more credibility every time it tries to take back control of the narrative.

My approach is to do a round robin of "credible news that is well-researched by journalists" and also alternative news sites to see the different spins on various stories. For instance let's take the latest story about Saudi Arabia banging the war drum and Bojo's 'commitment' to supporting it. Then include the following story into the mix and there is a bigger picture that makes more sense:

UK sales of bombs and missiles to Saudi Arabia increase by almost 500% since start of Yemen war | The Independent

Unfortunately for your precious "credible news that is well-researched by journalists" they've lied to us so many times that more and more people look elsewhere for what's really going on. The establishment and their media bullhorns have lost the narrative. No amount of 77th brigades and internet censorship can force that to change. The only way the powers that be can win back any respect is to start actually serving the people they supposedly represent and getting onto the right side of history.

Exactly. There are varying levels of quality and depth of information. Financial Times versus The Sun.

The websites you're referring to: how do you know which ones are of high quality information and journalism and which ones are simply a guy in his bedroom churning out articles, copied from other sources, with inflammatory wording replacing more informative wording?

Accountability is important. The fact that in recent times some mainstream news sources have allowed their credibility to lax does not therefore mean these questionable sources you are citing are suddenly credible and worthy of your belief! The solution is to improve the mainstream news sources, not simply rely on random websites with no credibility.

Credibility is earned. Inflammatory articles get hits because they cause excitement and push you deeper within your own thought bubble; much like facebook does with filtered posts, to ensure you mostly see things that you agree with or that your thought process approves of.

Edit: Just to add - I can see exactly where you are coming from, but it is illogical. All these decades we were manipulated by mainstream media (aka: media that built it's reputation for reporting up over decades - of course with mistakes; mistakes are part of human existence) and now you have the freedom to read any angle on an event you wish. But in those angles: they aren't reported for good reason, they are often nonsense and purely to induce partisan thinking. I find the glimmer of quality only in broadsheets these days - Daily Mail, Sun, et al, can die as far as I am concerned. They are almost as bad as ZeroHedge.

The Doomsday Clock timekeepers say we're now the closest to global annihilation since 1953 | CNBC

        • The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists on Thursday moved the Doomsday Clock to 2 minutes to midnight, the point of global annihilation.
        • That is the shortest window of time since 1953, when the Soviet Union tested the first hydrogen bomb.
        • The North Korean nuclear crisis and failure to adequately tackle climate change are top risks, the Bulletin said.
        • The group leveled a number of criticisms at President Donald Trump.

US stealth bombers in Guam appear to be readying for a tactical nuclear strike on North Korea | Business Insider

The US has been quietly amassing firepower in the Pacific during a lull in tensions with North Korea, but recent developments on an under-the-radar nuclear weapon suggest preparation for a potential tactical nuclear strike.

The US recently sent B-2 stealth bombers to Guam, where they joined B-1 and B-52s, the other bombers in the US's fleet.

While the B-2 and B-52 are known as the air leg of the US's nuclear triad, as they carry nuclear-capable air-launched cruise missiles, a smaller nuclear weapon that has undergone some upgrades may lend itself to a strike on North Korea.

Just as this is happening ...

Pyongyang has warned third parties against fueling tensions and interfering in the inter-Korean reconciliation process, claiming it is making a “great effort” to reunify the peninsula against the backdrop of US nuclear threat.
“We will courageously smash all of the challenges of the nation’s desire for reunification,” the government statement carried by KCNA reads. “Let all the Koreans rise up in the peacekeeping struggle against war to baffle the reckless nuclear war moves of the US which brings disaster to [the] land, setting dangerous flames!”
A first strike against NK = war with China (and Russia). I think it's posturing and trying to keep the fire stoked.

                      So _what_ begins?

Now Assad and the Russians have completed the recovery of that Syrian town where _someone_ (Syrians, we're asked to believe, on the verge of their victory) released some chlorine, maybe everything will quieten down.
