Might be more helpful to just explain the significance of the commonwealth and the meaning of the games.
Well said Mitch, nice to see maturity and class in response to the exact opposite.

Or you could give a personal explanation as to what the games mean to you; that brings it to life a bit more. I gave my explanation here but it's primarily a sporting motivation; you might have a different reason to appreciate the games, so give it; then he'll get personal explanations instead of some sterile story from a games website or a book.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

You began it with racist connotations by instantly separating your identity on the basis of race/nationality. Using your race as an excuse for not understanding and even by implication sneering at something that is part of British culture.

"I am from a different country and I am therefore superior so why do you people feel the need to be part of a group that celebrates itself by having a sporting competition".

If you had just simply said you don't see what all the fuss is about and what a waste of time the commonwealth games is then fine. You did not - you brought the issue of race into the question and used it accordingly.

I happen to agree with you.

I also agree with your final sentence:

My advice to those who don't like sport or don't see the point of it; don't watch it and don't whine about it.

which is what I said the difference being (on the basis that he used the race issue to justify his position) I suggested and alternative.

              What a BS
You only read in it what your pathetic simplistic mind wants to read in it.
Nowhere did I say or even suggest, I was superior nor did I bring up the issue of race into the conversation, it was you who did this, all I did was agreeing with the OP questioning the purpose of the commonwealth games. Perhaps you should read the title of this thread? Did you accuse the OP of the same things you accused me of?
I hope you will be banned from this place for a while

If he wasn't from a 'foreign' country then you wouldn't have told him to 'p!ss off back to where he comes from', a classic taunt uttered by racists to immigrants ever since significant numbers of parts of the commonwealth (south asian, west indian primarily) arrived in the 50s and 60s to work and settle here. Rather than admit you made a mistake and apologise you further compound your faux pas by defending your statement...admit it, apologize and move on!

                      This is what you wrote:

Not being from the Uk or the commonwealth originally I have wondered as well what the purpose of this is

if you were to apply this sentence before criticising any custom in any country you would be branded a racist. The implication of this statement is designed to show that because of your race you are superior and look down upon the custom that is in this case the commonwealth games.

Here is a custom about hospitality in Arabian countries. I found it on the internet:

                      Hospitality
According to information from the U.S. Department of Defense, hospitality is one of the most deeply held and important of Arab customs. Hospitality is far more than being hospitable to an expected or unexpected guest. It is a matter of personal and family honor and is perceived almost as a religious obligation, a means of doing service for God. This special position of hospitality in the customs of Arabic countries is directly attributable to the influence of ancestral bedouin culture on Arab peoples. Nomadic bedouin tribes inhabited the deserts of the Arab world, and with the challenges such an environment presented, had to be able to rely upon each other for survival in times of need. Thus came the custom of hospitality and its associated concepts of honor, obligation and reciprocity.

So how does it look if someone like you criticises this custom beginning with the words:

Not being from an Arab country originally I have wondered as well what the purpose of this is.

As I said had you challenged the validity or desirability of the Commonwealth games on economic or social or sporting merits then that would be fine. Instead you played your own race card because you thought it would give strength to your point.
