I got into an argument on Facebook with an Israeli guy yesterday about this (he was in favour of the military action that Israel have been taking), and below I've pasted what he said in response to my assertion that Israel's "Iron Dome" is akin to an umbrella that wards off Hamas rockets like an umbrella wards off rain:
"... which for us means running for shelters multiple times a day, laying on the ground when attacked while we're out on the road anytime at random, having kids schools, camps, tourism and the economy completely disrupted because hey it's hard to be productive when you have to leave business or a bomb shelter and boy does it ever cost tonnes of money to the economy when tourists are too scared to visit because ROCKETS ARE BEING LAUNCHED AT WILL ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. No no everything is just fine we have the iron dome which intercepts everything like magic, like the rockets are just fireworks exploding in the sky for our musical enjoyment. Except of course in southern Israel where so many are launched that many hit. And of course except for today when one hit a lady's home right near Tel Aviv. Living under daily terrorism is not an option. Not for or any one in the world and that includes us"
and after a cutting reply by me, he replied:
"For me to actually reply to the above would require me to humiliate you for not understanding almost any word I said in the above post or grasping any of it's meaning, either because you unwilling to, unable to or both. You overlook every damaging effect of Hamas terror that I just illustrated above and go right back to the tally of how many are dead in each side. Newsflash, this is not a video game. Do you understand what Cause and Effect is? Do you understand that allowing a terrorist group to launch rockets at your cities whenever they choose is not a viable option to anyone in this WORLD? Do you have any comprehension how huge the additional Economic, Societal and Psychological damage is to Israel, it's businesses and business partners around the world, it Tourism trade and It's people - families and children who have to wonder if they can be safe today and go about their business without running for cover because people are trying to kill them. If this is no big dea and it's only about a death tally score just because Israel has no choice but to fight back and has better means to do so, I'll tell you what let's aim the rockets away from us and at YOUR CITY, and you can walk outside with your umbrella and tell us how it's really no big deal and doesn't affect you at all! LOL It's so easy when none of this actually affects your life to make these ridiculously thin points with absolutely no validity whatsoever."
and
"What bothered me about what u said is -"only" two people killed and we are already scared and hiding. It does make sense. People were saved by being in shelters. Kids were saved cause cities in the south didn't open kindergartens when rockets were fired and hit the empty kindergartens. It is scary and even here in tel Aviv people are scared. Old people that can't make it to shelter on time. I speak for myself when i say I don't underestimate Gaza's civilians life so don't underestimate ours too. Thanks"
Do you think they have a point? And does this justify them launching strikes that have the effect (but not the intention) of killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians?Comment

If there are Hamas targets in there, Why warn them?
If there are Civilians in there why are you bombing them?Comment

Happens everytime, and after a while Israel has to cease with little effect on the Hamas military. It must really frustrate them.
Does Hamas use human shields? Who know what the real story is. We get propaganda on both sides.
All Hamas is asking for this time is that Egypt open the Rafah gate. Though why they bomb Israel and not Egypt mystifies me. I would imagine Egypt has far less American bombs than Israel does.McCoy: "Medical men are trained in logic."
Spock: "Trained? Judging from you, I would have guessed it was trial and error."Comment

I am glad to see some people standing and defending Israel, it allows us to distinguish the vicious Israeli apologist animals from those with human values. It's easy to forget that because these are baby Arabs that it's ok... If it were blonde blue eyed european babies I am sure the media would see it differently.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyoneComment

If an affluent democracy means having several million people living without right and dignity then I hate to see what a non-affluent democracy would look like. Palestinians are still a part of Israel yet they have no human rights. Is that democracy?Comment

Arafat was not a terrorist he was actually looking for reasonable solution but they carried on bulldozing the Palestinianns homes, and blamed it on Arafat. When the Palestinians voted in Abbas, the Israelis pointedly ignored him built a wall and carried on bulldozing their villages.
The Israelis don't want a settlement because they just want to keep the "status quo".
well the answer is Hamas...
They only have themselves to blame. Hamas will get stronger and will fire increasing amounts of rockets.
It's up to Israel if they want peace. They don't really, they just want the land. That's fine but then they'll have to live with the rockets. They won't solve this by marching into Gaza, they'll just "feel better".
Lets not forget there was a cease fire so Hamas weren't firing rockets to "destroy Israel" they're firing rockets because Israel arrested hundreds of palestinians. They weren't all responsible for the opportunistic killing of Isrealis youths. That was just Israel taking an opportunity put some Palestinians in jail. I didn't notice Israel arresting hundreds of Settlers because the Settlers killed a Palestinian in retaliation.Last edited by BlasterBates; 23 July 2014, 16:09.I'm alright JackComment
