Is it legal to give a price on a web page and not make it clear that it's excluding VAT? These are difficult questions.

If you ask a contractor what rate they are on, and they choose not disclose their commercially sensitive information, then that should be the end of it. Attempting to find out this sensitive information via other mechanisms is where ethics come into it.

Many contracts that I've seen specifically prevent the contractor from discussing the rate with the client, so I would expect the client to be reminded of that when they consider what information to provide in a reference or not.

I don't consider asking the question unethical - using other methods to get that information may or may not be unethical. In the same way that if a contractor asks an agency what margin / mark up they charge and the agency refuses to tell them, I wouldn't expect the contractor to then start hassling the client to reveal that information.

For what it's worth, I've never asked an agency what margin they take, and I've never asked the client either. Mainly because I don't give a flying **** what the agency charges as long as I am happy with the rate and the client is happy paying that rate for me. If an agency can only compete on price rather than sourcing the best candidates, then the client can be the loser.

                That's all that matters, really.

FWIW, I can't see it, can't ping it, and mxtoolboox says "Lookup failed after 2 name servers timed out or responded non-authoritatively" when I try to do a DNS lookup.

you're right, thank you for the heads up. My browser had a previous version in memory I guess.

We're speaking with the hosts/devs now.

                  Thanks again.
