Company name

Having formed my Ltd recently, I now think I may have been a little hasty in the naming of it. Currently, it's named with "Consulting", i.e. MOFO Consulting Ltd.

I'm not too sure about consulting now & am looking to change it. It doesn't appear to difficult to change the name, but I was wondering if there was an alternate way, for example using a trading name - i.e. MOFO Systems (a trading name of MOFO Consulting Ltd)???

What are people's thoughts on names for Ltd's? I'm marketing my business as a network consultancy. Please take a moment to vote!

Whatever you choose, call it a "PLC"..

IANAL, but I think you can pretty much make up a trading as name as long as you put the true company name somewhere on anything official, like invoices. You might need to talk to your bank so you can accept payments to your trading name.

Sounds like you're worrying over nothing though. If you were MOFO Sandwiches Ltd. you'd have a point, but Consulting instead of Systems doesn't sound that significant.

For traditional contractor roles the company name doesn't matter in the slightest, and usually it's only an agent that would see it.

For IR35* purposes don't have I.T. or Consultancy - Hector goes down the list looking for these.

Works wonders. Also allows you to frig it to something else when the IT market bombs.

My company name is really generic, so that I can use it for anything that I want to, should I ever want to get out of IT. So 50% of the business is IT related (mine), and 50% is my wife's hand made cards and wedding stationery business - only one set of accountants fees to pay! We then have separate trading names for the company, which are more relevant to my line of business and hers.

Friend of mine keeps changing the name of his company to match whatever he is working on at that time - expensive way to do it, since every time he needs to pay Companies House to make the change.

One other thing - I used to work for a BIG software company / consultancy. Whenever I was working on producing bid documentation for projects, one thing that we were not allowed to put in was the word "Solution", since this implies that you were going to solve the problems. All a customer needed to say was "this isn't a solution" and it makes a much bigger challenge legally - at least that's what the legal boys told us!
