I actually think this situation came about by the person 'known to the team' had been approached directly by the new bank . He \ she stated they wanted 400 a day (role advertised at 350). The new bank said no so he \ she declined. The new bank then needed to interview an alternative (me).

Around the time they interviewed me, the guy 'known to the team' realised he \ she wasnt going to get more than the advertised rate and told them he \ she would do it for the 350.

The new bank then went back to the agent and said the post had been filled.
Yeh. Similar then. They interviewed you just in case but really wanted the other guy.

I know its never going to happen but I wish employers/agents would have some morals sometimes and make some attempt to treat people fairly and not fanny them around like this.

Lots of reasons why this could have played out as it did, and it's always good to have a backup.

Maybe the "known" guy wasn't quite able to commit as quickly as they thought, so they interviewed you in case he fell through.

He could still fall through now, and you might get a phone call out the blue offering you the role (whether you now want it is another thing of course).

Well clearly everyone will have different opinions. The agent told me that the new bank made an offer to the 'known person' and this was accepted. 24 hours later the agent said they didnt know what was going on but the new bank wanted to do a telephone interview at short notice.

I dont think back up was a consideration of the new bank here. Far from it, imo. The scenario only makes sense with a direct contractor asking for more and the client saying no (or at least, not that much) then, the direct contractor agreeing to take what the client offered or a little more.

The agent said this goes on 'a lot' in scotland and causes them (the agencies) grief.

Anyway, its done now. Just thought I'd give a warning to others about what might happen. I'd have been really hacked off if I'd have spent 100+ quid on a return train ticket for this scenario to have played out the way it did.

You sure that they weren't just 'pumping' you for free information on how to do things the right way?
Nothing better than getting some free advice from an SME!!!
Role might always have been getting filled from inernal.
I know other contractors who've had this done to them!!

No, they were pumping me for info. Mo the role wasnt filled internally.

Hope the ones you know hadnt forked out lots of cash to get to the interview.

I did to the tune of £350 for a plane ticket. I did ask the agent for a phone interview first to screen me for suitability but he said the bank (...) insisted on face-to-face.

I'll not be bothering to apply to any bank in Scotland in future.

an AGENCY advertised a job on JobServe three weeks ago in Central London for senior Java developer with functional programming language experience. I applied for the contract gig. When they got in contact with me, I was taken aback, they actually said the job is in Scotland and would I be interested in applying. I said no. I said this ends here. #WTF

I'm fed up with these poor tactics. I mean what part of "I am interested with positions X in this location Y" is difficult to comprehend. Why lie about a gig's location?

On another occasion, a different AGENT, phones me up about another job in Scotland, probably the same institution, RBS, and the location is off-limits. I said I am not interested no. She retorts, why am I not interested? I said I am not interested. I put the phone after saying good bye. (I now ignore all phone calls this agent and the agency.)

The moral of the story is don't be pressurised by agents or anyone else who will try to fill position or wants to send a CV, unless you really want to go 400 miles away from your home and family and have the work-life balance and can consider the disruption or actually desperately need the money.
