I am not sure why you are assuming this is an SC role. There are three pointers away from it... The agent is asking for the references, not the vetting agency. They don't need 10 years. No one will try vet a new person for a one month contract. So I think it is safer to assume this is NOT an SC role, it's just a sockie.

Daft agent. Actual referees will have moved on and possibly to other companies. Anybody saying do you remember Joe who worked for you in 2005 (more than two/three years ago) is likely to get referred to HR if they get anywhere at all.

            Uh, NLUK:

Not totally convinced that it's a sockie.
So that's where I am saying that I'm not convinced.

If it isn't, then if you are going for a security cleared roll, then I could imagine that you'll to provide 10 years of employment history etc when applying for security clearance. I can't remember what they ask for exactly off hand.
That's the bit where I am using making up a case - hence the ifs and imagine.

However, that's not the same as references and you wouldn't normally be asked until you actually had the roll in the bag.
This is the bit where I am saying that you wouldn't be asked as references. And for what it's worth - clientCo where I am at the moment and have been three times previously get the agency to do all of the collation of paperwork for the SC vetting.

I'm not saying that I am correct, but was simply trying to imagine a valid scenario for what the OP said.

I wonder if it's fishing for leads, or something more sinister - social engineering to get more info about organisations:
