Hi,

Do I have to use an umbrella company or a UK limited company in order to do contract work in UK? I have my own company in Belgium and I would like to use it for contract work in the uk. Can you tell me if this is possibel?

You can but you need to register it in the UK, you would need to keep a separate set of accounts.

In my view it would be better and simpler to either go through an umbrella if it is a short contract or set up a Ltd.

Even if you remain as a Belgian tax resident you are still liable for taxes from income sourced in the UK.

Double taxation treaties mean you won´t be disadvantaged.

You will probabily end up paying less tax using an umbrella company than using your Belgian company . If you are self employed in Belgium then you need advice on your social security payments
I do not have a Belgian LTD and I am not self employed so all I need is an S1 from the UK government which covers me in Belgium. Social security payments for the self employed is very complicated

The answer to your question is "yes" .

In fact you can work as a contractor in the UK without any form of intermediary, called a "sole trader", but you will find that agencies won't enter into agreements with you on this basis in the UK because it exposed them to some tax and SS risks.

For this reason you will in practice need a Ltd Co. or Umbrella Company in the loop. Whether an agency will accept your Belgian company is for them to decide, but your right to use it for up to 183 days is guaranteed by EU law and not contested by HMRC so far as I know.

Some ClientCos will only deal with a UK Ltd, some will deal with Umbrella and Ltd, whether they accept a Belgian Ltd as acceptable I'm not sure.

Most large London corporates will not deal on a self employed basis, i.e. non Ltd, non Umbrella basis.
