IMO most agents think that we want to sneak behind their backs to go direct.. and most contractors think all agents are on fishing expeditions when they call

      QF paranoia.

I doubt it's worth the hassle.

Had a similar thing happen to me a few years back. I'd contracted with a client a few times and then went direct. After securing the third stint directly with the client f&%^&( pimp tries to musscle in saying he represented me. Luckily the client told him to sod off...

Been there, done that. All's fair in business.

Though from my experience the agencies work in a dog eat dog world and are far more cut throat than contractors will ever be.

              I can better that.

CV goes to recruiter....LaSomething and Chums......recruiter bod, knowing he's off to a new firm to beef up their practice, sends your details over to them and they contact you for roles they want to put you into (none of which are actual leads yet)...and then he doesn't progress you for the role you applied for. Then he leaves LaChums and leaves you hanging.

So, Data Protection breach or what ? Let alone how dodgy it all is if you can't even trust the firm he's working for to protect you whilst he's getting ready to head for the exits. Poaching city.

                Here's mine ...

Agent describes role over phone, I say "not intersted, sounds boring". Agent calls next day saying I have an interview, "oh sorry, I thought you said submit it, you might as well go along now, treat it as interview practice etc.." blahh blahh. I was out of contract at the time and the client was good so I went along. Interview went well but I could tell it was as boring project. Agent calls and I have an offer. I politely decline. Interviewer then phones me on mobile, really annoyed "Why did you come for interview if you're not intersted?". Politely got out of it all without too much damage but I'll never attend an interview "for practice" again plus never deal with the agent again - who still calls me! She knew full well I said no and submitted anyway.

You lost me here. You can't blame the client really, can you?
Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

Normally, you don't need an agent for those types of gigs.....
